"We are doing a lot of things. But if we could move into a center, we could have a much more expanded program…A community center is a whole different thing." - Lorraine Danser, UCCYP - LI Newsday 5/19/95
The statement above is just one example of how far we have come. In 1995 we had only one property at 800 Jerusalem Avenue which only afforded meeting room space for community organizations. Today we have fulfilled Ms. Danser's dream somewhat. There is no doubt that that dream for expanded space will be fulfilled as well.
Our major accomplishments since inception include the acquisition and modest renovation of two contiguous properties equaling 1 1/2 acres at 800 and 806 Jerusalem Avenue. The properties are utilized by two principal agencies, Uniondale Community Council, Inc. and Energetic Enterprise Youth Community Studio, Inc. to deliver youth-related activities. Aside from the programs they administer, such as Summer Camps, Music Instructions, and After-School programs, the facilities also serve as their administrative offices. Other tangentially related organizations also utilize our services and facilities.
The organization has reached an important milestone in recent times that brings us closer to our goal of a state-of-the-art green community center; with the pledge by the Nassau Health Care Corporation to allow space and at least $2 million towards building the community center as a part of the proposed A. Holly Patterson re-development as the "Senior Village at Patterson". John J. Byrne Community Center | UNIONDALE is excited at the prospect of "partnering" in that important $1 billion project in the community.
